Have you ever encountered a video of people eating a massive amount of food while scrolling your social media? I bet most people have experienced this. If not, maybe you have heard the word "Mukbang" or "ASMR Mukbang". If you still don't have any idea what is it about, don't worry and keep on reading because we will talk about this 'phenomenon' or 'trend' briefly today ๐Ÿ˜‰

The Mukbang phenomenon actually originated in South Korea, where Mukbang come from the combination of two Korean words— meokja (๋จน์ž) which translates to eat and bangsong (๋ฐฉ์†ก) which means broadcasting. Thus, it brings the meaning of an online eating broadcast where the host would eat while interacting with viewers. As many Koreans are living alone nowadays, they feel lonely when eating. This is due to their culture where dinner is the time for them to socialize with their family and friends. Therefore, to beat the feeling of loneliness, they start to go live while eating and interacting with the viewers.

Mukbang started around the year 2009 or 2010 using a live-streaming platform like Twitch and AfreecaTV before spreading all over the world. Even though the main objective of Mukbang is to have company when having lunch or dinner, Mukbangers (the host) simultaneously could earn extra money from it. Better, become their main source of income.

Dona for instance is one of the most popular Korean Mukbangers on youtube. It is believed that she earns around 2.846 KRW or USD 2.37 million per month! That is much more than what normal working people earn. Crazy isn't it? We also have Mukbangers from Malaysia such as Isaac Osman, Syedot ASMR, Hisyam Raus, OOHAMI and MDM ASMR.

By the way, have you ever wondered what kind of foods are popular in Mukbang? Foods that are popular among the Mukbang community are ramen, seafood, Korean rice cake (tteokbokki), Korean fried chicken and rolled eggs. But one of the most favourite food is ramen. The popularity of ramen is so great as there was once a challenge named the "Korean Fire Noodle Challenge" where people challenge themselves to complete a packet/packets of Hot Chicken Flavour Ramen produced by Samyang Foods which is known for becoming the spiciest instant noodles available in South Korea. Malaysia is not exceptional in joining this challenge thus making Samyang noodles become so popular in Malaysia.

In Muk-Joy, we provide 3 flavours of Samyang noodles which are Samyang Hot Chicken Ramen, Samyang Cheese Hot Chicken Ramen and Samyang Carbonara Hot Chicken Ramen. All flavours are sold at RM5 each, excluding delivery charges. We are operating mainly at Mahallah Nusaibah and Mahallah Hafsah at International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM).
